Sri Tirumalai Krishnamcharya(1888-1989)

The Father of Modern Yoga

Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), or Krishnamacharya for short, was an Indian Ayurvedic healer, scholar and yoga teacher. He is widely regarded as “The Father of Modern Yoga” for reviving Hatha yoga, and combining breath and movement into vinyasa.

Although he had many students, some of his that went on to become influential yoga teachers include B.K.S. Iyengar, T.K.V. Desikachar, Indra Devi and K. Pattabhi Jois.

Pattabhi Jois(1915-2009)

Ashtanga Yoga Founder

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

Pattabhi Jois in Mysore,
